“Forced to Flee” Simulation at VMS
Time: 10:30am-12pm at Vedder Middle School
What to know and expect:
“Forced to Flee” is an interactive simulation that invites people into a decision-making experience based upon real experiences faced by the 122 million people who are currently displaced in our world.
- You are assigned a “family” and a role in that family and then you go on a literal “journey” together.
- What will your family do when violence puts you at great risk? Will you hide out in your home, or will you decide to leave?
- When you are stopped at a military blockade, how will you get through? Will you bribe the guards to keep going, pay a human smuggler to get you across the border or give up and go back?
- There are many excruciating choices, unexpected hardships and occasional acts of kindness that you will encounter along your journey. "Forced to Flee" is a moving experience that cultivates empathy for individuals who have been displaced from their homes due to violence and natural disasters.
After the interactive portion, we will gather back together for a short debrief and discussion time.
For the kids/infants: There will be nursery provided for this day. As well, kids are welcome to attend this event with parental supervision as you go through the event together.
What to bring: Nothing, just yourselves, maybe a friend!
